Film – Marie Antoinette

Chris was really bored with this film. Fortunately the baby was awake so he kept himself entertained by feeling him move. I can’t say that I was not entertained, but I’ve seen better films.

We are getting more and more excited about the baby which is silly because we still have 3 months to go. We have been thinking about the things we need to get done around the house in preparation for the baby, but we have not made any definitive plans. It feels like it is going to be a while…

Film – Borat

Shrug. There is something to be said about quality control – “Borat” is just as funny and enjoyable as “Ali G Indahouse”.

There is a scary part of the movie of course. About two-thirds the way through the film, Cohen stops instigating and the content does not change in its obscenity.

Films – “What Iva recorded” and “The Queen”

“What Iva recorded” played this week at the CFI. I rarely go to CFI mostly because the films they choose are depressing for the sake of being depressing. “What Iva recorded” is quite depressing by the new Croatian cinema standards, but it is also fun. It was worthwhile to go and see.

“The Queen” is a good film though I encountered my usual reserve about film documentaries. It took a bit of effort to watch it as a film and not as a representation of true events. There was a funny line when Queen excused herself off the phone by saying that she has to go take care of the children now.

Film – Conversations with Other Women

This is a first movie in a while that I really enjoyed from start to finish. The story is not un-heard of or original but it is so well done! The film used split screen technique so both actors are on screen pretty much the whole time. This makes it feel like a theatre piece. The second screen is sometimes used for flashbacks so it never gets boring. The dialog is witty and acting is amazing.

Film – The Science of Sleep

This is a really lovely film. Visuals are great and acting is fantastic. I can’t really think of a film I’ve seen with Gael García Bernal in which he was not fantastic, but this film convinced me that he is an acting genius. He actually seems half a meter shorter than he was in “Motorcycle Diaries” and “Bad Education”. Other actors, though I have not seen them before, are amazing as well. While I was watching the film, I had some trouble with the plot. Thinking back at it now, it was not too bad.

Film – The Illusionist

We dodged the bullet and it looks like everything is going to be all right for now. I am still somewhat confined to the house, but we celebrated last night by going to the movies.

The Illusionist was enjoyable enough. I’ve heard raving reviews so I expected something more, but it was quite a nice fairy tale film.
