Film Review- The New World

Chris has Alliance Atlantis preview passes for a year so we get to go see movies we otherwise would not go to see before everyone else does. Yesterday it was The New World. I am reluctant to say that the movie was bad, mostly because it boldly attempted to be artistic, and that alone stands it apart. It reminded me of Baraka and Yes. Yes is an excellent British movie that is spoken entirely in verse. Had The New World managed to emulate timing of Baraka and poetry of Yes, it would have been a good movie.

Film Review – Casanova

I was a bit jealous of Chris’ end of the year movie list. I could not make my own since I have not kept track of the films I watched in 2005. I shall correct this by listing here all the new movies I see in 2006. We watched Casanova over the weekend and enjoyed it verily. It is not for everyone, but if you enjoyed other period comedies with Heath Ledger, this one is a good bet.

Long overdue non comprehensive movie review

Here are a few movies I saw in the last little while…

Exils
Exils
We saw this movie on a whim at eXcentris when my aunt was visiting. I am quite glad because it is very good. The film relies on cinematography and acting and keeps dialogue to the minimum while still getting the point across.

Episode III
I am not even going to make a link. If you’re into it, you’ve seen it already. I’m not a Star Wars fanatic so I didn’t even mind seeing Episode III without seeing the II. The best part about it was that I went to see in the open-air theater in Cres. There is nothing quite like watching the x-wing fighter scene and then looking up to see more stars. Go Universe!

Sabah
Sabah
I haven’t gone to Bytowne for a bit. It was partially because I was so busy and partially because I became bored with the current film trends. I’ve seen so many same movies that I started to sigh at trailers for being boring and predictable. Sabah was an excellent movie to get me out of that funk. It is a very sweet comedy/love story. It is in the vein of “Bend it like Beckham” with all the commotion, tenderness and sweetness. Just sweet, sweet, sweet. Exactly what I needed!

Kamimaze Girls

Kamikaze Girls

Chris made sure we had ticket for this one (it was sold out for both Fantasia showings) and it was worth it. It almost makes me want to join a scooter gang.

Otakus in Love
Otakus in Love
This movie is absolutely fantastic!!! Go Fantasia! It’s got drama, violence, hilarious plot twists, comic book shop, art on rocks and a musical number. What more can you ask for?

Palindromes
I just came back from watching this film. I haven’t quite made up my mind about it, but I definitely enjoyed watching it.

Movie review – Team America

We went to see “Team America” with Paul and his roommate. The movie wasn’t bad, finger-licking funny even. If you like South Park, you’ll like it. The puppets were cool and the premise was hilarious but the script stunk. The script, if you can call it that, was relying on spoofs and hackneyed movie stereotypes. It might have been funny except for the fact that it has been done (better too) to death before. Spoofs genre should have been returned to Junior High Schools everywhere, like, two years ago.
Overall it is a fun movie. I’ve heard too many good reviews of it to not have expectations and expectations have ruined many a passable movie to me before.

File Review – Shaun of the Dead

This movie is really fun. It is about a guy dealing with life. His girlfriend left him, his best friend is about to get kicked out of the flat, his job sucks, his step dad is a jerk and London is being taken over by zombies. Hilarity ensues.
