Spot the differences in the two pictures

I had all the intention of blogging about the above picture a few weeks ago after we came back from the medieval festival, mostly for my sister’s amusement, but then I had stuff to do and it became old news.

However, today, my sister posted (completely unaware of the first one) a matching picture on her blog and now I have no choice but to compare and contrast.

See those three figures in centre right of the above photo? Those are the paramedics monitoring the jousting match. It was a little bit after 1PM on a stupidly hot day and they were standing there all straight and strict looking with no hats on. Frankly, I was more worried about the paramedics suffering from heat stroke than the metal-clad guys knocking each other off the horse with a stick.

And here is the contrasting picture (shamelessly stolen from “Sjever i Jug”)
Hitna pomoc

So, the similarities… Three paramedics/emergency room doctors in uniform, one girl, two sameish looking guys observing a subcultural sporting event (for non-Croatian speaking public, the second picture is from youth firefighters games). The differences are striking also, though the Canadians have a much neater uniform, the Croatian team is at least dressed for the weather. Look at them all smiling and relaxed, leaning against the fence amongst the crowd.

All Owen all the time

Day two of our reduced numbers went well, I managed to get a few good pictures of Owen with his new haircut. I have a lot of tidying up to do in the back yard so Owen and I made use of the morning shade to spend some time outside. Owen lasted about an hour before he got bored and insisted we go do something else.

There are some festively type things going on downtown, but I have been taking care of toddlers long enough to know that nothing on the schedule would be interesting enough for Owen to justify the trip. Instead, we went to Chapters to play with the Thomas set in the evening.

During the day, I managed to complete the toy organizing project. I am not sure if this will be any help whatsoever with keeping the house tidy, but it is worth a try. I feel like I accomplished something which is nice.

Weekends with just me and Owen (and the New Guy) are very different than when the whole family is here. We didn’t do a lot compared to how our usual weekend are. Mostly we stuck around at home and if we went anywhere we only ventured out once per day and we kept it to Kanata.

Owen and I (and the new guy)

Chris and Trev are away this week so the rest of us are getting by without the big guys. This is the first time Owen has been away from his big brother since we went to Dubrovnik a year ago (time flies…). We have to come up with a whole new family dynamic. Usually Trev entertains Owen and Chris entertains me.

It has been less than a day and so far we are not doing too badly. Yesterday we played outside a little bit, then we tried to clean up some toys (using the opportunity while Trev is away to organise) and then we went to get groceries. This morning we got out bright and early and went to the bike shop to fix up my front wheel that got a little bit banged up (nothing serious, part of the break and fender were a bit closer to the wheel than optimal) last time we transported it by car. After that we hang up laundry and made lunch. Owen is napping now so I guess I ought to do the dishes and think of activities for after nap.

The new guy, whose name we still don’t know, is moving around and making himself noticed. I feel good though half of my brain must be missing (or busy with other stuff). I am very forgetful and can’t concentrate too much. I will try to remember to take some pictures of Owen later because it has been a while since I took any pictures, most of the latest pictures have been taken on Chris’ iPhone.

Intentional eaters in mid summer

It has been almost two months since we’ve started getting veggies from the Riverglen farm. So far, so good. I am glad we are splitting boxes with friends though because each weekly the box contains much more veggies than we eat and getting a single box every two weeks would be half as much fun.

My problem with veggies is that I don’t really care for them so I usually just get the veggies I dislike the least and force myself to cook them when I am making a full meal. Though I always make a point of having some veggies in the fridge, too often they stay there longer than they should.

Now that we are signed up with the farm, not only do we get a different set of fresh, local, seasonal veggies every week, but I have so far been successful in preparing them and using them up by the end of the week. The boxes are getting fuller though so I hope I will be able to keep up.

CAN-bike course

After cancellation of a regular course and after some e-mailing around Charissa managed to score a CAN-bike “Cycling Freedom for Women” course just for the two of us. We are not so greedy as to wish to keep it all to ourselves, so if you are interested, please let me or Charissa know. It’s $80 for a full day course and it will be held on August 14th. You need to bring a legal bike (i.e. have a bell on it), a helmet and water.

I’ve taken a similar course when I was 10, though I suppose at the time it was more of a YU-GO-bike course (yes, this pun is the principal reason for this post). It was very useful and we even got little licences that allowed us to bike on the street unsupervised. Of course, by the time I actually got around to biking unsupervised, I was old enough to legally do so anyway rendering the licence moot. Nevertheless, I did posses a legal cycling licence at 10.

I’ve been reading about CAN-bike courses for a bit and the people touting them swear that they are useful to experienced cyclists so I hope I will not be too bored. I do have some finer points of traffic logistics to iron out anyhow. I am particularly looking forward to the portion of the class dealing with biking with and supervising children. You would not believe how many kids I see in front of Stephen Leacock school cycling the wrong way in traffic. Ok, just six, but that is six more than there ought to be. These kids probably never biked with their parents or their parents were not quite up on their cycling in traffic foo. In any case, I would not want to teach my kids bad habits so I hope that this course proves useful.

Stupid July

It is too hot and mosquitoy to be outside. We have actually been hiding out in the basement for the last two days because the rest of the house is too hot. Because we have to run air conditioning to keep the house at livable levels I can’t even open windows to let the fresh air in. July is gross, I can’t wait for it to be over.

People complain about Canadian winters, but summers are way worse.

On the positive note, I got some knitting done.
