Where I lament that I will not get to all 7 trillion books on my “To Be Read” shelf

I’ve become inured to the fact that I’ll never read all the books that I want to read. That’s fine. Really. I keep buying books with the intention of reading them, but I rarely get to them. It’s not that I’m not reading. I am. I’ve read 25 books so far this year, admittedly less than usual, but I’ve been busy. The thing is, I get excited by something, then I buy it, and if I’m in the middle of another book, well then. It goes on the shelf. And then it’s a crap-shoot if I ever get to it. The last five books I bought are: Scalzi’s Lock In, Stross’ Rhesus Chart, Carriger’s Curtsies and Conspiracies, Kress’ The Friday Society (That’s Adrienne, not Nancy),  and Palahniuk’s Fight Club (though I really shouldn’t talk about that one). Have I read any of them? No. Am I reading, at least? Of course. I’m a quarter of the way through Farmer’s To Your Scattered Bodies Go, and I’m probably going to read Venus on a Half-Shell next, and then probably Hitchhiker’s again, because I want to see how much of the former leaked into the latter. Will I ever get to those five books I listed above? I hope so! The first three definitely, since they are known quantities, and I find Poor Ol’ Bob Howard’s personal dilemmas personally attractive. Fight Club, I bought because I want to take it apart and learn a bit from it, so that’ll probably be read. We’ll see about the Friday Society. Canadian writer though, so it has that going for it, eh?

My “To Read” shelves from August 31, 2012. Alas, some of those books are still there. Even though I know they’ll be awesome…

I wasn’t going to read Lock In until I read The Human Division (Yes, YES. I know they’re completely unrelated. But I like progressing as the author progresses. Just like me, they are hopefully practicing all the time too, and I like to see that.). Admittedly, I said the same for THD and Fuzzy Nation and Red Shirts, and I read Red Shirts first in that list. So I’m obviously full of shit.

One thing that I have managed is reading recent books. This year 17 of the 25 I’ve read were published in the last 15 years. The oldest was The War of the Worlds, read because I passed through Woking, and I knew I’d be seeing the Fighting Machine in front of the railway station, and I wanted to relive the thing. This turned out to be an awesome idea, thank you very much, as I had frissons running down my back and goose bumps whenever I passed a sign for, say Weybridge or Shepperton. Yes. That’s how it goes.

Ok, so that was actually a meaningless statement. I decided to go through my Goodreads list of the books I’ve read and see how the percentages broke down. I’ve been above 65% new books (new books being defined as less than 15 years old) since 2009. Before that the best I managed was 2006 (the year I started keeping track), where I hit 47%. That was also the year where 10 of the 51 books I read had been published before the 20th century, so go figure. I also didn’t have any children that year. Also go figure.

All this to say, I wish I had a time turner or something, because I want to do much more than I can actually do, and that sucks. But hey, I’ll cope if you cope.

For the curious, here’s the list of books I have on the go right now:

Physical book: Walk Softly, Witch by Carter Brown (On hiatus because I misplaced the damn thing)

Physical non-fiction: The Hidden Tools of Comedy by Steve Kaplan (Suggested by Mur Lafferty)

Lunch book (IE that I’ve left at work): The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman by Laurence Sterne

E-Book: Mythago Wood by Robert Holdstock

Audio: To Your Scattered Bodies Go by Philip Jose Farmer

Erm, bio reading?: The Kick-Ass Writer by Chuck Wendig (my Doppelganger!)

I would recommend any of them, even Walk Softly, Witch. Total roman noir. I made it to page 40 before I lost it, and the protag has been beaten 3 times already, each time more grittily than the last. Heh.

12 Years!!!

12 years! 12 years, man! I’ve got a lovely lady and she’s stayed with me for 12 years! Can you freaking believe it? Actually, I can. I’m a happy duck.

We celebrated at Allium, after going to see The Trip to Italy. The order of the evening worked well because the movie followed Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan as they travelled across Italy stopping at restaurants in order to write travel articles about their experiences. All this was fictional, of course, but the restaurants exist, and the meals they ate whetted my appetite for something outstanding. Allium did not disappoint on this front. I quite enjoyed the movie too. The two mains and the director (Michael Winterbottom) have worked together on another piece that I’ve seen called A Cock and Bull Story, a heroic attempt to adapt The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman to the big screen. I don’t know if you’ve read the book, but it is full of asides and silly humour and darkness and completely black pages and the like, and it takes Laurence Sterne most of the first volume to get to his own birth. This is depicted in the movie. Brydon and Coogan play Uncle Toby and Tristram, and themselves trying to figure out how to make the film work, and they do a bit of the same in The Trip to Italy. As Brydon says, he is playing himself, but a more affable version, not that he isn’t affable, no no no. It made me wonder how much of the film was scripted, and how much was Winterbottom giving them the leeway to simply be themselves, only more so. The same could be said, really, for A Cock and Bull Story, as the non-Shandy bits seem so loosey-goosey. The film is a sequel, which they hang a lantern on, and spend a few minutes making fun of sequels. Ha. The original is called The Trip, and is available on NetFlix UK. I’m keen to see it now, as the format is sound (two funny guys on a road trip sampling good food, visiting the haunts of Byron and the Shelleys,  and having the type of conversations you dream of having), and the location is one I’ve always wanted to visit myself: The Lake District. If it weren’t for the time and the fact that my sweet would probably want to watch it too, I’d load it up now.

Carley, of Carley and Hubert fame (Hi Carley!) recommended Allium to me the last time I saw her, and she hit it outta the park! The place is on Holland south of Wellington (for you Ottawa types), next to The Foolish Chicken (somewhere I think I need to try out too…). One Pom Collins ( a tom collins with pomegranate juice), tomato appy, and halibut (which I ordered just for the halibut) dish later, and I was happy. The food matched the deliciousness I saw on the silver screen (though with less pasta), and our banter rivalled that of Hepburn and Tracy.

All in all a fantastic way to celebrate a fantastic day!

*I took 3 little boys on a 12 hour odyssey through 3 airports.

We flew home. The boys behaved admirably. I held it together. That is all.

*where I reacquaint myself with Zagreb

TL;DR: IT ISN’T!!! READ THE DAMN THING!

I woke up far too early this morning, thanks to Trevor’s insistence to not sleep. I ate, I’m sure, but I can’t remember what. We, being the boys, Kolby, and me, went for a walk that included a visit to a photo exhibit at the Umjetnicki Paviljon and a stop at the pub of a new (to me) microbrewery in town called Medvjedgrad. I had Mrki Medvjed, which reminded me of another beer I’ve had in Ottawa, but I can’t place it right now. I’ll have to go retry all the beers in ottawa to figure it out… The boys were pretty ragged after this, so we trammed it home, me with an actual ticket, so I didn’t have to have my thumb over the “Send SMS” button in case inspectors came to haul me away for not having a ticket.

Mali Medo. I forgot to take a photo, so here’s one from someone else. Please don’t kill me.

Then lunch and a nap and a radler and then I started packing. Boj wanted me to take apart the bike they’d bought in Cres and bring it home, but there seemed no point since we were talking about going back next year, and we’d need another bike then.

I was finished around 9, and I finished packing around 10. The boys were in bed, and my in-laws were in bed, and despite the early wake up call (5:30), and my complete and utter exhaustion, I could not bring myself to go to bed right away, and ended up there at 11. Doh. At least I woke up and caught the taxi in time. (note the timey wimey thing going on in this post…)
