TL;DR: Robert J. Sawyer will be at Can-Con this year! They are handing out the Aurora awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Hugo awards)! Fun WILL be had! Get a membership already! wooooOOOOooo!

And now… I received an email update from Can-Con, the Conference on Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature, AKA Ottawa’s literary SFF con. I’ve posted the email in its entirety, since it’s chock full of information about the con and what’ll be going on.

So, why don’t you join me, eh? You can even vote for the Auroras, though you’d better get your butt in gear, as the deadline is Sept.13th. And yes, there is a voter packet with most (not all, alas) materials provided. And yes, you do have to be Canadian to vote (or at least a permanent resident of Canada).

Dear Mr. Berry,

Thank you for purchasing a membership to CAN-CON 2013 on October 4-6! Our records indicate that you’ve purchased:

  • 1 Adult Weekend Membership

  • 1 Sunday Aurora Banquet ticket

If you purchased via PayPal, please retain your receipt as proof of purchase. If you purchased a student membership, please be sure to bring student identification when you arrive at the convention. If you purchased a banquet ticket, the ticket will be available upon registration on the weekend of the convention. If this information is incorrect, please notify us immediately.

We’ve got an exciting line-up this year with: Robert J. Sawyer as Author Guest of Honour, Hayden Trenholm as Editor Guest of Honour and Mark Robinson as Science Guest of Honour. We’re also hosting the Aurora Awards this year, which we haven’t done since 1995! There’ll be a banquet, an Awards ceremony, and a vendor room with many of the nominees’ works available for purchase.

If you haven’t checked out this year’s Aurora Nominees yet, we encourage you to do so via the following hyperlink:http://www.prixaurorawards.ca/ To vote you must be a member of CSFFA and the cost is only $10. Please encourage your fellow Canadian writers, editors and artists and fans with your vote.

Also new this year, we’ve relocated the convention to a downtown venue to the joy of many. We’ll be at the Minto Hotel at 185 North Lyon St. Ottawa and hope you’ll like this new hotel as much as we do. There is plenty of public transportation to the area but there is no free parking unfortunately . The hotel offers underground parking at a rate of $7.96/night for guests (rate is higher for non-guests and both rates are subject to change) and the City of Ottawa offers parking at various locations. Please refer to the City of Ottawa website for more information: http://ottawa.ca/en/residents/transportation-and-parking/parking/city-parking-lots

To make a hotel reservation, you may use the following hyperlink: https://bookings.ihotelier.com/Minto-Suite-Hotel/bookings.jsp?hotelId=10002&rateplanid=1366470 or you may call the hotel directly. Local 613-232-2200 Toll-Free 1-800-267-3377. Be sure to use the CAN-CON 2013 name for the convention’s reduced rate. The special rate of $154 will be available until 6pm FridaySeptember 2013. Although several rooms are type are available now (Studio suite through to 2-Bedroom suites) as the date approaches availability decreases, so be sure to book early! All rooms reserved after the September 6, 2013 cut-off date will be subject to the hotel’s regular rates.

Keep an eye on our websiteTwitter account or FaceBook group for news and updates as we approach the weekend of the convention. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us through our email address at: can.spec.lit@gmail.com.

2013 is going to be a GREAT year, one we’ll never forget and we’re so glad that you’ve chosen to be a part of it. Some of the best support you can provide is to spread the word about our convention so please tell a friend about us if you think they might enjoy the convention. Your support is greatly appreciated!
