Ready for the Hugos

I have my popcorn ready to pop, a couple of beers in the fridge and the Interwebs humming at a cool 15 MB/s. I’ll hopefully watch it on the live feed. It would be better if I could attend in person, not only for the joy of it, but also for the chance that I’d make it all the way through. It starts after my bedtime, after all. Oh well, what I put up with to see if popular opinion meshes with mine! I will be tweeting my reactions, so you can follow me @bojnberry to see when I actually doze off :).

Con Structs

My jealousy rages as I follow the #renosf twitter feed. How I wish, how I wish I was there…

To make up for the lack of Renovation this year (and ChiCon next year, alas), I have a three-fold plan: I am going to Can-Con in September (assuming my sweet doesn’t pop that weekend… Hey, you never know!), SFEraKon/EuroCon 2012 in April and I just bought a supporting membership for the London 2014 bid for WorldCon. I just have to figure out something to do in 2013. I’ll obviously go to Can-Con again, if you are wondering. How could I not? It’s. Right. There.

One funny thing about EuroCon 2012 is the payment system. They are only accepting bank transfers. It’s actually cheaper for me to buy my membership when I arrive than ahead of time, even though it’s twenty Kuna more. The international bank transfer fee is fifty Kuna. That’s thirty Kuna I could spend on beers! NB: Fifty Croatian Kuna is slightly less than ten bucks, and the most I paid for a local beer this spring (Tolkien House and HopDevil aside) was fifteen Kuna, so there.

I have also made a pledge to myself that I will have made at least one sale by the time WorldCon 2014 rolls around, and I intend on making good on it. That being said, back to writing!

(ED: I also have made a pledge to not hit the “publish” button before I’m actually done writing a post. Sigh.)

On the resumption of reality

Or something like that. I have some more stuff to post and a lot of emails to answer, but I crammed my week so full of Vegas recovery, family reintegration, stag parties and golf outings that I’m still not sure which shoe goes on which foot. You will have to wait a bit for something more coherent out of me (like my review of Destiny’s Blood by Marie Bilodeau (short review: it’s good. Go read it. You can even get a free e-book copy if you follow the link, too!)).

So, instead, I present one of the first digital photos I ever took. Topical, since a certain 20th anniversary is only days away!

Book Review – What Ho, Automaton!

What Ho, Automaton!I received What Ho, Automaton! by Chris Dolley through the Early Reviewers program at LibraryThing (You can click the previous to gawk at my awesome library!). This e-book consisted of the titular novelette and a novella titled ” Something Rummy This Way Comes”.  As you might be able to tell from the titles, these stories take place in the world of “Jeeves & Wooster”, with some interesting changes. The action, for instance, takes place roughly 10 years earlier than the original stories. Stiffy, a woman in the stories/tv show is now a man (to make the joke that you are currently thinking of). Aunt Agatha is now Aunt Bertha. Bertie Wooster is now Reggie Worcester, and Reggie (Jeeves’ first name in the original, if you were wondering) is now a steam-powered valet.

The novelette follows the first meeting of Jeeves and our Bertie Reggie, and in classic Wodehousian style, Jeeves is immediately put upon to help Worcester extract his cousin from an engagement. Hilarity — involving prize pigs, monomaniacal country gents and accidental engagements  — ensues.

The novella begins with Reggie under the stern eye of his indomitable aunt once more. She’s decided that Reggie must marry, and has gotten him a standing invitation to every ball that season. He learns that several débutantes have gone missing, and with the aid of Jeeves and a deb who is immune to his betrothal avoidance system (6 or 7 cloves of garlic before each ball), Reggie puts on the deer-stalker and acts the private investigator.

Both of these stories were entertaining, and adhered well to the spirit of Wodehouse. Jeeves was cucumber-like in his coolness, and his prodigious brain always came up with a solution, even though it might not be one that Reggie would enjoy. Reggie was affable, and extremely silly, as he should.  The steam-punk mods are well done, and important to the story, though I have a feeling the 10 year bump in time-line was merely to get Reggie into a Stanley Steamer.

All in all a quite a bit of fun, especially for the Wodehouse fan, and well worth the 2.99 you have to drop for it.

DefCon Day 3

Haha! I remember now why I needed my notes to write this post, it’s because other than the Cipherspace talk, I didn’t actually go to anything that warranted talking about here. Oh well. The Cipherspace talk also confirmed in a fairly straightforward way what I always thought way back in the Zero Knowledge days, that reality can leak through these things. I wanted to listen to Tracking the Trackers, but I got sidelined by an extremely cheap buffet at Gold Coast. Mmm, pancakes and egg rolls! I’ll watch it when it comes up on archives.

I was good to see BarKode at the awards ceremonies. I wished I could take part in the blood drive/be the match drive, but nb my domain. Too bad. But there was a huge turnout anyway, so I don’t feel too awful.

Til next time!
