Things to do around WorldCons

When I went to LoneStarCon, a couple of the people I was hanging out with took off one of the days to travel to Houston to visit Johnson Space Center. Wow, thought I, I wish I had thought of that! (NB: I didn’t ask to tag along, if you’re wondering, because I A: didn’t know them that well and didn’t want to impose (go being Canadian!) and B: I actually had plans that day anyway.)

A Kettle in action on the ELR, Sept 2012
A Kettle in action on the ELR, Sept 2012

This did get me thinking. I am going to LonCon and ShamroKon in the summer, and there are a few definite things that I like to do when I’m in England (can’t say for Ireland, as I’ve never been): Travel by kettle, take in a show, and drink a few pints amongst other things. In Dublin I think I’m going to go with the flow of the con, but during my stay in London, I have plans…

  • On the Saturday of the con, I’m going to RailEx, which is in Ripley, believe it or not. That’s a six-hour round trip, but it should be a heck of a day out, and I’ll still be back in time for evening fun.
  • The Tuesday I arrive, or perhaps the Tuesday after, if I’m too jet-lagged, I intend on seeing Perfect Nonsense, a play based on P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves and Wooster. Sadly, according to the website, Stephen Mangan and Patrick MacFayden will only be performing until April. I will go regardless.
  • Thursday I’d like to catch a taping of either of the BBC Radio 4 comedies “The Now Show” or “The News Quiz”, which ever is on. Hopefully they aren’t both on summer hiatus. I understand it’s quite difficult to score tickets to this, so I’ll keep my fingers crossed. (NB: I tried last time I was in London with no success.)

Now, that’s all fine and dandy, and I think I’ll have a well-rounded, jolly old time this summer. And it got me thinking: I intend to go to WorldCons from now on, and I spent a goodly amount of time last night thinking about what I would do during the other WorldCons. Here’s what I came up with:

Spokane 2015:

Um, actually, I don’t know. I originally figured I’d be able to see a Spokane Chiefs game, but their pre-season usually only starts the week before Labour Day, and that’s too late. My other plan was to bring the whole family, as we had been debating going to Lake Louise in 2015 already, and it’s not that far. My sweet vetoed eighty hours in the Berry Bus, though, so I’m going to have to rethink this one…

Kansas City 2016:

    • Go to a Royals game, of course. This is a thing I do. Heck, I’ve even seen the A’s play in Oakland, and I was the only one there (or so it felt). I already worked out how to get to the stadium from the Convention Centre. It’s not pretty.
    • Walk across the border into Kansas City, Kansas. Walk back, say, “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.”
    • Considering going to Dodge City, but it’s a heck of a drive.

Beijing 2016:

Yes, they have a bid! Do touristy type stuff, I guess. This one is a tough sell for me, to be honest, mostly because it’s a Croatia year, and I wouldn’t want to go all the way to China and just stay there for a week. Great Wall! Forbidden City! Shanghai! Hong Kong! We love the Yangtze, Yangtze Kiang! Flowing from… Anyway, you get the point. I’d want to spend a month, and I don’t have a month to spend. I guess I’ll go to NaSFiC if they win. Sniff. Unless I’m miraculously up for a Hugo, then wild horses etc etc.

Montreal 2017:

Two words: Old Dublin. And visit my Mum, I guess…

Helsinki 2017:

No idea, but it’ll be awesome! Wooo! This is definitely a trip where I’d like to bring the family, and hang out for a week or so post-con.

Japan 2017:

Hit all the places I didn’t manage to see last time I went. This would also be a multi-week, but at least it’s not a Croatia year. Two words: On-Sen. I guess that’s actually one. Maybe not. Eat as much curry rice and okonomiyaki as I can handle.

Washington DC 2017:

Visit the Smithsonian museums that I haven’t hit yet.

Ya, that’s about as far as I got. If you have any ideas, for things I can do or see on those quieter moments (especially for Sasquan!), let me know ;).

Some “Weird Al” Top Tens

Feb03

Apropos of nothing, I present to you a series of top ten lists based on the work of “Weird Al” Yankovic. I say that (the apropos bit, that is,) but really, this came about as I drove to Montreal, listening with my boys to his oeuvre, and the inevitable “What’s your favourite song?” came up. So here you go.

I was originally going to link all the songs to their respective YouTube videos (if they existed), but it turns out that I’m far too lazy for that, so instead I’ll point you to the “Weird Al” YouTube page, where you can hunt for them on your own, cuz, like, I’m not your servant! And, of course, because I’m lazy, I’m cutting and pasting the titles from Wikipedia, so there are things for you to click, if you feel so inclined.

NB: I’m ignoring Internet Leaks, since it was completely contained within Alpocalypse. Also, I don’t actually own his first album, which is why it’s so poorly represented here… Though I do have the 7” Another One Rides the Bus, which got me into this mess in the first place.

For the curious, K1’s favourite songs are Yoda and Frank’s 2000″ TV, K2’s favourite is Living in the Fridge, and K3’s is Tribute to Pants (I’m not quite convinced he knew what we were talking about).

Obligatory @CanConSF mad props post

TL;DR: Robert J. Sawyer will be at Can-Con this year! They are handing out the Aurora awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Hugo awards)! Fun WILL be had! Get a membership already! wooooOOOOooo!

And now… I received an email update from Can-Con, the Conference on Canadian Content in Speculative Arts and Literature, AKA Ottawa’s literary SFF con. I’ve posted the email in its entirety, since it’s chock full of information about the con and what’ll be going on.

So, why don’t you join me, eh? You can even vote for the Auroras, though you’d better get your butt in gear, as the deadline is Sept.13th. And yes, there is a voter packet with most (not all, alas) materials provided. And yes, you do have to be Canadian to vote (or at least a permanent resident of Canada).

Dear Mr. Berry,

Thank you for purchasing a membership to CAN-CON 2013 on October 4-6! Our records indicate that you’ve purchased:

  • 1 Adult Weekend Membership

  • 1 Sunday Aurora Banquet ticket

If you purchased via PayPal, please retain your receipt as proof of purchase. If you purchased a student membership, please be sure to bring student identification when you arrive at the convention. If you purchased a banquet ticket, the ticket will be available upon registration on the weekend of the convention. If this information is incorrect, please notify us immediately.

We’ve got an exciting line-up this year with: Robert J. Sawyer as Author Guest of Honour, Hayden Trenholm as Editor Guest of Honour and Mark Robinson as Science Guest of Honour. We’re also hosting the Aurora Awards this year, which we haven’t done since 1995! There’ll be a banquet, an Awards ceremony, and a vendor room with many of the nominees’ works available for purchase.

If you haven’t checked out this year’s Aurora Nominees yet, we encourage you to do so via the following hyperlink:http://www.prixaurorawards.ca/ To vote you must be a member of CSFFA and the cost is only $10. Please encourage your fellow Canadian writers, editors and artists and fans with your vote.

Also new this year, we’ve relocated the convention to a downtown venue to the joy of many. We’ll be at the Minto Hotel at 185 North Lyon St. Ottawa and hope you’ll like this new hotel as much as we do. There is plenty of public transportation to the area but there is no free parking unfortunately . The hotel offers underground parking at a rate of $7.96/night for guests (rate is higher for non-guests and both rates are subject to change) and the City of Ottawa offers parking at various locations. Please refer to the City of Ottawa website for more information: http://ottawa.ca/en/residents/transportation-and-parking/parking/city-parking-lots

To make a hotel reservation, you may use the following hyperlink: https://bookings.ihotelier.com/Minto-Suite-Hotel/bookings.jsp?hotelId=10002&rateplanid=1366470 or you may call the hotel directly. Local 613-232-2200 Toll-Free 1-800-267-3377. Be sure to use the CAN-CON 2013 name for the convention’s reduced rate. The special rate of $154 will be available until 6pm FridaySeptember 2013. Although several rooms are type are available now (Studio suite through to 2-Bedroom suites) as the date approaches availability decreases, so be sure to book early! All rooms reserved after the September 6, 2013 cut-off date will be subject to the hotel’s regular rates.

Keep an eye on our website, Twitter account or FaceBook group for news and updates as we approach the weekend of the convention. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us through our email address at: can.spec.lit@gmail.com.

2013 is going to be a GREAT year, one we’ll never forget and we’re so glad that you’ve chosen to be a part of it. Some of the best support you can provide is to spread the word about our convention so please tell a friend about us if you think they might enjoy the convention. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Clarion Write-a-thon

Jun13

<tap><tap><tap> Is this thing on?

I have a new story that has almost reached “leap out of my head” proportions. Good timing, since the Clarion Write-A-Thon — a fundraiser for the Clarion Workshops that help foster those SF/F writers that you and I enjoy so much — starts in a few weeks. It’s a six-week write-a-thon that runs concurrently with the workshop with the aim of raising money to help offset the expenses of the students (remember, writing, though noble, generally pays somewhere between jack and schitt (That’s a combo clean rating and Jasper Fforde joke, folks)).

My goal is to get out 15000 words of The World Turned Upside Down out of my head and into my word processor. That’s roughly 350 words a day. Totally doable! My fundraising goal: 5 cents a word. Make it professional-like, eh? I’ve already pledged 0.5 cents a word, so I just need 45 more people to pledge 0.1 cent a word and I’m golden!

Extremely brief elevator pitch for TWTUD: Think The Historical Illuminatus Chronicles mixed with Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. It sounds awesome in my head!

Here, again, is the link to pledge (or even just donate in my name, if you don’t want to have to do math!)

Thanks, and wish me luck!
